The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That

As any significant honors show approaches, there’s always an outcry for the addition of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of followers dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial above others. This is the request: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications actually cover numerous genres, and you can find room for most games within them.

Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
  • Another creative title missed out in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most engaged experiences worldwide maintaining this status for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, while interacting with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay decades.
