Minister States MoD Investigating Security Risk from Chinese Cars, with Staff Advised to Refrain from Secret Talk in Cars.

A defense minister has stated that the Ministry of Defence is currently examining the possible threats posed by Chinese cars, while personnel have been advised to refrain from discussing classified information in any vehicles.

Security Guidance for MoD Staff

During a recent interview on LBC, a defence minister commented on reports that MoD staff have been instructed not to talk about classified information while travelling in Chinese cars.

He explained that the ministry is “examining” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, however noted that safety is a issue in every modern vehicles.

We have a collection of tens of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles represent a tiny fraction.
But whether you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug Ministry of Defence devices into their vehicle, not to have conversations at a secret level in any vehicle, because of the growing threats of surveillance that exist in every single vehicle, to only have those confidential talks in protected areas. This is a wise and reasonable thing for everyone concerned about security.

After it was suggested that it would be prudent for the ministry to cease using all cars from China, Pollard replied: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the present time.”

Broader Security Background

This revelation follows reports from Norway and Denmark have alerted the United Kingdom to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made buses, which could allow the Chinese government to switch off public transport and bring chaos to public transit.

Additionally, a Russia intelligence vessel has been directing laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by government representatives.

The wider defence situation highlights the significance of strong protocols and vigilance in all aspects of official operations, from vehicle use to communication habits.
