RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, identified by intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several approach shafts down to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - established extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their valour," Healey added. "They were part of numerous British troops deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, shows how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "major assault" against IS targets in the country, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
